On the Road Again....

We are currently in Shreveport, Louisiana visiting my brother and his wife. We left home early (3:15 am) Monday morning to some pretty heavy rain and 44 degree weather. As we journeyed toward Chicago, the temperature began dropping rapidly and the rain turned into sleet/snow mixture and the roads went from bad to worse!!! I was driving this first shift, and I held a steady 40-50 mph for 3 hours. It was torture! So what was supposed to be a 16 hour trip with stops, turned in a LONG 19 hour trip. But, thankfully, we got here safe and sound and have had an amazing time! We are leaving here tomorrow morning to head to Texas! I am so excited to spend time with family and friends for the next few weeks!!!

Sweet Isaac!

Isaac! Isaac! Isaac!  I don't seem to blog about our youngest son too much, so this is totally devoted to him!  Isaac is now 10 1/2 months old and such a joy to raise.  He is very active and energetic and reminds us a lot of Noah in that sense.  He is also very sweet and loving and affectionate.  He looks different than the other boys did as a baby.  He is thin and tall...no chunk to him at all!  He resembles my side of the family far more than Michael's side.  As of yesterday, he started taking a few steps!  Amazing!  This morning he took 6 steps and I actually captured it on my phone!  Noah walked at 10 months, so this isn't too surprising to us.

At Isaac's 9 month appointment, the Dr. was going through the usual list of questions they ask at well-baby appointments.  When she asked about his language skills, she thought he should be saying more by this point.  At that time, he wasn't saying much of anything or making any noises at all.  She said that at his age he should be able to make a few hard consonant sounds (ba-ba-ba, da-da-da, ma-ma-ma, etc...) and he wasn't.  So she gave me some literature for a program here in Kalamazoo called Early On.  It is a program that sends someone out to evaluate your child to determine if he qualifies for therapy.  When I left the appointment, I felt frustrated, worried and scared...nobody wants anything to be *delayed* or *wrong* with their child!  I went ahead and called Early On immediately to set something up for Isaac.   As I was driving home later that day, Isaac starts jibber jabbering away in his car seat...I hear, "ma-ma-ma and da-da-da!"  I just started thanking the Lord! :)  I decided to keep the appointment just to have him evaluated.  His appointment was about 2 weeks ago.  Two ladies came out to evaluate him and when they do this, they evaluate the "whole child" not just the area of concern.  He did great in all areas...scored 11-13 months in motor skills, fine motor skills, social skills, and other areas that I can't remember.  However, he did score in the 5-8 month range for speech.  So he does indeed qualify for in-home help.  The ladies gave me a couple of exercises to start trying with him.  They both thought that his tongue had a lot to do with his lack of words.  He is constantly twirling it all around and hasn't really learned how to "deal" with it yet.  In the few weeks that we have been working with him, I have already noticed a difference.  His own therapist comes for the first time at the end of January and will work with him every 4-6 weeks for the next year.  They believe that he will be caught up in no time.

So that is the latest scoop on our Isaac.  We are going to Texas this year for Christmas and I am so excited for everyone to meet him!  He is an absolute doll.  Michael and I are debating getting him a haircut.  It is getting long and curly...but it is so cute!  I know that once I cut it he won't seem much like a baby anymore and I don't know if I'm ready for that yet!

Happy Halloween!

My mom sent the boys each a shirt like this!  Drew loved that it glowed in the dark!  All three boys wore them a few times and under their Halloween costumes!
Tigger and a shark...pretty cute, huh!?
We spent the evening with our friend's, the Stiltson's.  Reid and Drew are best friends at preschool!  We went to Trunk or Treat at the church, then hit a few of the houses in the neighborhood behind our house!  It was so much fun!
Poor Isaac.  I *assumed* that the Bumblebee costume Drew and Noah both wore as babies would fit him, but I was way off!  Isaac is too long!  Poor guy!
Drew, Madison, and Reid...all best friends at school!

Photography 101

Drew decided it would be fun to hijack my camera and try his hand at photography.  I didn't even realize what he was doing until he was 25 shots into it!  Here are some of my favorites...

Self Portrait
Learn to focus, kid...
Usually it helps if you tell him to say, "Cheese!"
I think this one turned out pretty good! :)  This is one of our favorite Tuesday night sitters!
What is the subject of this photo, Drew...Noah, my legs, Emily and Isaac?
There are many, many, many more...but you get the picture!  (No pun intended!)

Noah's costume...

This is not his Halloween get-up...just his everyday Super Hero-ness!  Wouldn't you feel safe with him protecting you?  Oh, and Drew is always Spiderman, not just on October 31st!

Silly Noah!

Noah is currently into dressing himself...and he will work diligently until he is *dressed* the way he thinks he should be dressed. I was folding laundry the other day and he found his pj's and immediately stripped down and worked for about 15 minutes to put them on...and this was the end result!

Poor kid...he got it all wrong...arms in leg holes and legs in arm holes! But at least he tried!!! What a cutie!

Fall Photos...

Here are some pictures that my friend Sara took of our family this past week! It was so hard to try to get the boys to look and smile at the camera all at the same time...but what can I expect from a 4 year old, 2 year old, and 9 month old! It was fun, we got some good shots...that's all that matters! :)

This picture represents us pretty well...Drew being compliant, Noah being loud, and Isaac doing his own thing!
Doesn't Drew just look like he adores me so much!?!?! I know I sure do adore him!
Isaac had no interest in what we were doing...it didn't help that he had just woken up from his nap for this fun little photo shoot!
Seriously...can there be a bad picture of this kid? He is so photogenic! And when did he get so big? Ugh...hurts my heart how fast time flies...
Another shot at a family photo...once again, timing was off! :)
Yea! He looked at the camera!!!! Believe it or not, he has already had one haircut!
Action shot!
The camera truly does capture their personalities...except Drew was grumpy at this point...
Awww....best friends!
My FOUR silly boys!
Thank you, Sara, for taking the time to take our pictures! You are amazing! :)

Speaking of dish washing...

They're never to young to learn, right?!?!

Like Brother, Like Brother, Like Brother...

I'm not sure why my boys were/are fascinated with our dishwasher....

Silly boys! Oh, and the order is Drew, Noah, Isaac in case you couldn't tell and were wondering! :)

Fernihough Happenings...

I don't know how many people in the last few days have insisted that I update the blog...so here goes!!! I don't have any picture at the moment, but I'll get on that...

  • My brother Andy and his wife were here for a weekend visit a few weeks ago. It was great...I really enjoy spending time with both of them. We ate at a new place downtown Kzoo called Madja Madja (sp?)...go, it is amazing!!!! Can't wait to go back! The rest of the weekend was pretty low key...just hanging out with the boys. Oh, we did go on a 10 mile bike ride around Gull Lake. It was the first time I had been on a bike since our UP trip this summer! It was fun! Isaac was in love with Jaime. He followed her around and just wanted her attention non-stop. I haven't seen him act that way with anyone. Cute stuff! :)
  • Our friends Mike and Lee are here this weekend with their three kiddos. It was a pretty last minute trip, their idea! We are so thankful to spend anytime with them that we can. We took the kids to Gull Meadow Farms today and all had a blast! They get to go on our small group date night with us tonight. Should be fun!
  • We started youth small groups a few weeks back. I have a great group of freshmen girls this year. They are so fun and energetic and exciting! I'm very excited to journey through life with them this year!
  • Drew is getting tall. Now that it is cooler out, he is in pants. And they are high waters on him! Poor thing! I need to pull out the 5's. I've also discovered that he can't say his L's. He makes the W sound instead. It's pretty cute! He is really enjoying his pre-school class this year. He has a much bigger class than last year. He is still pretty quiet and reserved, which I am very okay with! :) They focus on a letter a week and so far he knows A, B, and C. He can write them (lower and upper case!) and can tell you the sound each makes! I love it!!!!
  • Noah is getting tall. I think he is going through growing pains at night. But I can see a difference in him. He is also accident prone. Just this morning he busted his mouth and I'm still trying to figure out if the big hole in his gums needs medical attention. It isn't bleeding, but a noticeable size hole is there. He is talking like crazy in full, LONG, sentences. His verbal capabilities are so advanced compared to other kids his age and where Drew was at this age. He is very lovable and so adorable!
  • Isaac is getting so long. And crawling everywhere. I have a feeling his personality is going to lead more toward Noah's outgoing one. I don't know how I feel about that yet! He is amazing, though.
  • Hmmm...what else? Oh, I have a new addiction...GUITAR HERO. Thanks to Andy and Jaime!!!! We play constantly and have even ventured out to some songs on "hard." So watch out, Andy and Jaime! Can't wait to show you my mad skills at Christmas! :)
  • Michael and I are going to a conference next week in Atlanta. I can't wait to get away and go have some fun!
I guess this is all of updating I can do right now....sorry it is very random! But at least it is something!!!!! I'll do some picture soon! Promise! :)

Massive To-Do List...

Will it ever all get done?? Maybe if I publish my to-do list, more of it will get done! So let's begin...

  • Paint the kitchen table/chairs....our table/chairs are trashed from normal wear and tear. And after painting the furniture in the boys' room, I really want to paint the kitchen stuff!
  • Clean out the orange carpet room. This is a large room in our basement that has ugly orange carpet...hence the name of the room! It is the collect all room...exercise equipment, sound equipment, piano, garage sale stash (I had every intention to have a garage sale this summer...didn't happen!), furniture that doesn't have a home...lots of stuff!
  • Organize laundry room/craft area/storage...this is ongoing because I'm constantly digging stuff out!
  • Clean out Isaac's closet...blah.
  • Transition clothes for all boys....pull out fall/winter stuff in the right size.
  • Fall clean my house...I like to do a major cleaning each season...it needs it now!
My brother and his wife are coming in town on Thursday...I'll see how much I can get done between now and then, but I've decided not to stress over it!

Pictures of the Week...

Drew's First Day of Preschool!

Drew had his first day of preschool on Monday. He is in the four year old class this year! He is so happy to be back! We dropped him off this morning for his first official day by himself...Monday was just open-house format and I stayed with him!

New Room!

My parents gave us my brothers' old bunk beds about 3 weeks ago...and a friend of ours just happened to be going to Texas to pick up a trailer and some landscaping equipment...so he swung by Dallas and picked them up for us! They are great beds, with nice big drawers for storage underneath. We sanded them down and repainted them black...I loved the final result so much that I decided to repaint their dresser as well! And next I'm going to repaint their toy chest! Here it is...

The dresser before...

The dresser after...

And the beds!

Drew sleeps on the top and Noah sleeps on the bottom...so far they think they are the best thing ever! So thanks, Matt and Andy!!!! :)

Black Raspberries!

We live next to an empty lot that has tons of wild black raspberry bushes. The boys love to go pick berries and then just eat them! I convinced them to collect enough to make a cobbler, actually two cobblers to give to our neighbors that share the lot with us! The cobbler turned out to be really good!

Here are some pictures of the picking....

And here they are helping me make the cobbler...

And enjoying the final product...

It's Symmetrical!!!

Drew loves Legos and will play with them non-stop for hours on end...well, maybe not hours!! :) This creation impressed me...

New Blog Address...

I decided to change my blog address...actually, my sister-in-law decided to change hers because some people were commenting that she didn't know, and it was a bit freaky! Hers had her complete last name on it, as did mine. So I agree with her approach and decided to remove my last name from my blog! So sorry for any confusion!

Tidbits...

Isaac is crawling! Full-blown, up on all fours CRAWLING! It's a whole new world...back to vacuuming and sweeping non-stop! He is so quiet, too...I have to track him down a lot of the times. He can also stand in his crib. Too bad he hasn't mastered sitting down after standing! But he can go from crawling to sitting on the floor! It's so cute! I'll try to get some pictures!

Drew is at a birthday party. It's his first one to go to all by himself. Michael dropped him off at 12:00 and it doesn't end until 3:30 or 4:00. Wow! Isn't he too young for this kind of stuff?!? Good thing he is right down the street at our good friends' house! No worries from me! He was so excited. I can't wait to hear all about it.

Noah is talking up a storm now...and most people can actually understand him! His vocabulary is amazing. He talks in full sentences and even gets his pronouns right! He is getting way too big way too fast!!!

Well, I'm off to naptime...better enjoy my day with just putting two of them down for a nap instead of three!

Bike Trip to the Upper Peninsula!

This summer the youth group did a bike/mission trip to the U.P. It was an amazing trip...lots of great memories! We left early on Friday, August 1st and came home on August 6th. We took Drew and Noah, but left Isaac with friends...which turned out to be great, because there is no way we could have done what we did with him! Michael and the boys slept in a tent the entire time, and I slept in a tent the first night, then migrated into the house for the rest of the nights! We stayed at a place called "A Solitary Place," which is a place of respite for pastors and their families to go. There is a nice little house there that has three bedroom and one bath, set on 600 acres of nothing but land! The house is on a generator, so no electricity! At night we could hear the coyotes! It was a amazing...I have never seen the stars so big and bright! A great place to meet with God and reflect on His creation!

Michael ended up riding 194 miles, and I rode 125 miles! I was pretty impressed with both of us! Here are a few pictures from the trip...

Michael is in red...pulling into a sag stop for some nourishment! :)

Michael and me...we didn't dress a like on purpose!!!
This is at lunch one day... It was so fun to see how the high schoolers gathered around the boys and loved on them! They boys ate it up! Noah is doing push ups with Tim here...
Part of the trip was spent serving the people of the U.P. We did a lot of wood chopping for a church and a widow...both use wood to heat their church/home during the winter. It took us two days to get through all of the wood!!! We also helped out at a CareNet Pregnancy Center doing odd type jobs...weeding, painting, putting up shades, changing light bulbs, etc.
One day we rode to Tahquanemon Falls...what a beautiful place! Here I am with Sarah and Amanda. I logged the majority of my miles with these sweet girls! They waited for me and pushed me to finish...and they even experienced my panic when a hornet swarmed me for 18 miles! :) Family photo shot...Drew not wanting to look at the camera!
Aren't the Falls beautiful?

Drew posing with a moose....

Drew shooting the moose...
Since there was only one shower at the site, a lot of evenings we would just go to Lake Superior and "shower" there...it was a bit too cold for my liking, so I stood in line for the real shower!
Our last morning we gathered around the cross at "A Solitary Place" to reflect on the trip and pray. It was an amazing time and an all around amazing trip! I hope we get to do it again!!!
